Florianopolis - Ilha Sa Catarina - The Magic Island
After several years in Recife, the personal security situation finally became so complicated
that we decided to move to a more "civilized" area of Brasil. We started looking at
apartments early 2007 and finally found a suitable alternative in May after 3 trips to
Florianopolis. The trip from Recife to Florianopolis can take anything from 7 to 12 hours
depending on airline connections and level of chaos at the Brasilian airports. The apartment
purchase transaction was completed in September and the great move took place late
November to Early December. Included in this major enterprise were 5 cats, 3 dogs and 2
cars, apart from all the furniture and other stuff collected during the years in Recife. To say
that this was a complicated move is quite an understatement - it was almost impossible to
work out given the crazy rules applied to animal air transport. Anyway - it finally worked
out and we are in the apartment with the cats and the 3 dogs in a nice doghouse at
Regina's house (Ane's sister).

Recife - where life is slow and easy but a bit dangerous
Having visited Brasil more than 50 times from November 1986 until 2006,
and finally moving there officially as of 1.1.2004, this place became a natural place for me
to wind down and take it easy.
Following my retirement in 2002, I spent most of my time here, returning to
Europe for some 3-4 months per year during the European summer period.
Recife is located in the North Eastern part of Brasil, aprox. 1 h 15 min flying
time south of the Equator. This also means that the weather and climate is almost
the same the year around, 26 - 32 degrees C all the year and the only variation
is that during winter (April - October) it can rain a little bit more than during
the remainder of the year.
The apartment building in Piedade is situated on the beach, about 10 km south of
Recife Old City Center and 15 min by car from the Recife International Airport.
TAP runs daily flights directly from Lisbon (about 7h 15min flying time). Excellent
convenience but horrible service and food.
Since we decided to move to Florianopolis in 2007 (Anelyse's home town), we are
now trying to sell this nice apartment - so any potential customer - give us a call.
During the past years, there have been a lot of visits and activities - the pictures below
will bear witness.........

In January 2011, we decided to try to acquire a small property somewhere close to the center to
have access to a few square meters of land, a few plants, trees and a bit of grass while remaining
in the apartment in the center of the city as principal dwelling.
By chance, a house (rather run-down) came on the market just opposite Chico's & Regina's
house (Ane's sister) in Jardim Anchieta. Without traffic it is about 15 minutes away from the
apartment and very close to the Santa Catarina Federal University.
We saw some potential in the object so we purchased it end of February 2011. A long and
cumbersome period of renovation started and we are just about ready now (March 2012) after
about a year of rather heavy modifications.
There is also a second, mini house on the property with separate entry gate/parking which now
is rented out covering all the running costs for both houses.
The main house has 4 bedrooms, living, kitchen, dining area, service area and 4 bathrooms.
We have fixed up the kitchen, dining area, the living room plus I have occupied the master
bedroom as office because it has a nice air conditioning and en-suite bathroom.
The remaining bedrooms are basically not in use for the moment and no real plans for the future
either.
I typically spend afternoons/evenings in the house keeping the dogs company as well as doing
maintenance/installation work at the house. I also have a computer and Cable TV installed so I
can watch the lovely Fox News Channel and European football broadcasts.
